Replacing Windows, 5 Things to Consider

Living Room Window Inspiration

Replacing your windows can seem like a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be. With a bit of consideration, new windows can add beauty, value, and comfort to your home. Here are 5 things to consider when replacing your windows:

1. Consider Your Environment

When it comes to windows, different environments often have different needs. For instance, a mountain home that endures harsh winters may consider different windows than a coastal home with warm temperatures and threats of hurricanes. Consider the moisture level, altitude, and temperature of your home. Choosing the right window for your environment will help ensure your windows stay beautiful and last for years to come.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Change it Up

It’s common when replacing your windows to simply swap the old for the new. Yes, sometimes windows do need to be changed for energy efficiency or functionality. But, take some time to consider other options. Is there something interesting you can do to enhance the beauty and functionality of your home? Maybe you exchange a few double-hungs for a large picture window. Or add more light to your kitchen by expanding the window above the sink. Look for opportunities to add more natural light and to compliment or even change your home’s overall style. The possibilities are endless.

3. Add Natural Light Thoughtfully

No one has ever wanted less natural light in their home. But, it’s important to consider where you place the windows. For instance, unless you want the bright morning sun waking you up in the early hours, you might not want windows on the east side of your bedroom. Then again, if you’re a morning person, this may be the perfect option for you.

There are also rooms you may wish to add more natural light. Kitchens and breakfast areas are a perfect space to incorporate more sunshine. A bay or bow window will enhance any breakfast nook. Slider or casement windows are a great, functional option for behind the sink. Adding more light to your living room is never a bad idea either. Here, instead of just replacing what’s already there, consider reimagining the space. Add more windows, play with shapes, or take a more modern approach and opt for a wall of windows – let the light in.

4. Keep Your Home’s Style in Mind, or Don’t

When replacing or redesigning windows, you’re going to want to consider the architecture of your home. Begin by identifying your home’s style and then do some research, exploring other homes with the same qualities. What kind of windows do they share? Are you seeing lots of picture or grided windows? Maybe double-hung or bow? Take note of the color of the frames, what you’re drawn to, and what fits naturally with the aesthetic.

Of course, you can toss out the playbook and go a different way entirely. There’s no rule that says your windows have to stick to the current aesthetic of your home. Forgo the grided windows if they don’t speak to you. Don’t feel tied down by bay and bows. With some creativity, you could create a new, modern look that’s all your own – just be intentional.

5. Think of Windows As An Investment, Not An Expense

Let’s be honest, windows are expensive. But, replacing old windows with high-quality, energy-efficient ones can help reduce energy bills in both cold and hot climates. Windows can prevent condensation build-up and mold growth, reduce outside noise, and generally have a positive impact on the comfort and functionality of your home. Consider also, windows are a structural component of your house, and a vital piece to ensuring it stays sound for years to come. Yes, windows are expensive. But they’re an investment that will increase the value of your home and pay for themselves over time.

Had a contractor in NJ replace 17 windows using Vytex Windows in the spring. The windows are very strong and look high end. The new windows definitely helped with the drafts. Our old windows were original from 1987 and our home was freezing in the winter and hot as an oven in the summer. The new Vytex windows definitely got rid of the draft issue we had and the difference is very noticeable especially in the bedrooms. Next on our list is a new patio door from Vytex.

I am writing a nice review on my Vytex window experience. We are in new jersey and had all new windows installed about 10 months ago as well as a Vytex patio door. Our home was very drafty and made it very uncomfortable in the cold winter months and just as bad when it was hot in the summer. Our home is now much warmer and quite noticeable. The difference was equally noticeable this past summer when we had a heat wave; our home was much cooler...
