How to Select Energy-Efficient Vinyl Windows to Beat Air Infiltration

Modern Home with Vinyl WindowsAir infiltration is the unwanted flow of air into or out of a building through small gaps and openings in your house’s structure, especially windows. It’s a matter of concern for homeowners because it can lead to uncomfortable drafts, higher energy expenses, and an overall less pleasant living environment. Now, when you’re in the market for new vinyl windows, here are some important factors to consider, all while keeping a professional touch:

  1. U-Factor: This is like the insulation power of your window. A lower U-factor indicates better heat retention. Look for windows with a U-factor of 0.30 or lower, as they excel at preventing heat from escaping your home.
  2. Air Infiltration Rating: This metric measures how effectively a window keeps air out when it’s closed. A lower rating means fewer drafts and heat loss. Look for windows with an air infiltration rating of 0.3 or lower to ensure a more airtight seal.
  3. Weatherstripping and Interlocking Meeting Rails: These are essential features. Weatherstripping acts like a seal that prevents air from seeping around the window, while interlocking meeting rails keep the window tightly closed, preventing rattling and air leaks.
Understanding NFRC Labels

Air infiltration can make your home uncomfortable and increase your energy costs, particularly through your windows. When you’re in the market for new vinyl windows, prioritize those with low U-factors and air infiltration ratings. Additionally, seek out models with weatherstripping and interlocking meeting rails. These elements combine professionalism and functionality to enhance your home’s energy efficiency and comfort.

Had a contractor in NJ replace 17 windows using Vytex Windows in the spring. The windows are very strong and look high end. The new windows definitely helped with the drafts. Our old windows were original from 1987 and our home was freezing in the winter and hot as an oven in the summer. The new Vytex windows definitely got rid of the draft issue we had and the difference is very noticeable especially in the bedrooms. Next on our list is a new patio door from Vytex.

I am writing a nice review on my Vytex window experience. We are in new jersey and had all new windows installed about 10 months ago as well as a Vytex patio door. Our home was very drafty and made it very uncomfortable in the cold winter months and just as bad when it was hot in the summer. Our home is now much warmer and quite noticeable. The difference was equally noticeable this past summer when we had a heat wave; our home was much cooler...
